Lately I‘ve been investing a lot of time preparing for a party that I’m not invited to. My son’s junior prom, taking place next weekend, has entailed three mall visits, two tailor alterations, hours of online browsing/shopping, a flower-festooned prom-posal, and a fire truck (don’t ask). With a brand new suit, shirt, shoes, socks, belt, tie, an inordinately expensive pocket square that matches his date’s dress and a pre-ordered corsage and boutonierre, he is way better prepared (and styled!) for this milestone event than I was for mine. Truth be told, I was the opposite of a prom-zilla! Picture a floral mini dress plucked from the sales racks at Loehmann’s, my longtime high school boyfriend and my twin sister who last-minute asked to tag along with us, all on a boat that circumnavigated Manhattan and kept us restlessly captive.
