I’m currently stretched out on the kitchen banquette, hoping the sunshine filtering through the windows will melt my anxiety as I stand (or, rather lie) on the threshold of my firstborn’s senior year and the eve of his final high-school days. It feels like a day of profound significance, a monumental occasion I will always remember, and yet at the same time it’s unfolding like any other Sunday, amid the familiar sounds of weekend life—Michael Scott’s voice from The Office, bursts of teenagers’ laughter, and the rhythmic tumble of sweatpants in the dryer. Not by chance, I have a book beside me, When Things Fall Apart, marked at the passage that reads: “Things are always in transition, if we could only realize it… The off-center, in-between state is an ideal situation, a situation in which we don’t get caught and we can open our hearts and minds beyond limit.”
I am smack dab in the in-between—idling in the foot-tapping post-summer/pre-fall caesura, riding out Mercury in retrograde, taping my youngest son’s semi-broken nose, 87 pages away from finishing Margo’s Got Money Troubles and starting Liars, and 1.5 episodes in to The Decameron. But, through it all, I’m opening my heart and mind beyond limit and sporting sheer lace cover-ups, above, among other cute new things in the process.
I’m also in the middle of wearing September on top (Sezane sweater or Kule button-down) and August on the bottom (sarongs), like Laura Vidrequin Roso, below.
And in the midst of contemplating the following:
Nikki Kule’s embroidered pants by Loeffler Randall.
Bow-embellished ballet flats for $150 at Anthropologie
Baum und Pferdgarten’s coat with a chic faux patent leather trim collar.
This Ann Mashburn’s suede bucket bag is waiting to go to New York Fashion Week with me, along with a coming-soon Parker Thatch charm. (Don’t mind by manicure, c/o of my 15-year-old niece!)
Topshop’s ready-to-roll t-shirt-and-sheer-skirt combo for bopping around Dimes Square.
If my tennis elbow ever heals, I’ll be gearing up in Lauren Santo Domingo’s High Sport checks. In the meantime, I’l see you again after the first day of school!
