There is a particular kind of power in an empty drawer. A whole world of possibility in a blank shelf. Moving into a new home isn’t just a logistical nightmare of cardboard boxes and misplaced chargers—it’s a process of curation. A chance to start fresh, to decide with intention what gets to stay, what gets to go, and what new elements might be welcomed into the fold.
If moving out is an exercise in letting go, moving in is a test of discernment. You stand in front of that first drawer and ask yourself: What belongs here? What is essential? What has earned its place? The world (and the Web) will try to convince you that every drawer must be filled, that every corner must serve a function, that an empty space is an incomplete one. Resist! At least I’m trying—for as long as I can!
I remind myself this move is not just about furniture and dishes—it’s about designing a life. It’s about choosing which habits to keep and which to politely escort to the curb. Do I really need five different kinds of tea, or do I just like the idea of being the kind of person who drinks five different kinds of tea? Is this the year I finally become someone who meal-preps on Sundays, or am I clinging to an aspirational vision of myself that dies at the hands of pantry leftovers and last-minute hot pots?
Moving offers a rare opportunity to distill life down to what is needed, what works, and what is worth a try. So, in the spirit of thoughtful curation, I am stocking my shelves not just with objects, but with healthy routines and small (and sometimes big!) luxuries that make daily life more intentional. A good (chic) lamp, below, for reading at night. A designated coffee station that feels like an indulgent morning ritual. A stylish basket for the mail I will absolutely forget to open until it becomes urgent.
What’s made the first-drawer cut so far: The ultra-organized, travel-ready Cadence containers for my new Sakara and tried-and-true Sarah Wragge Wellness supplements and multivitamins—finally everything is visible at a glance. (FYI: these pod-like containers are magnetic, leakproof, and stackable and come with this versatile case too. Truly genius design.) Also in the carefully-chosen mix: YSE’s Eye Masks, Morning Cocktail Vitamin C Serum (founder and bestie Molly Sims calls it a “time machine in a bottle,” and I am inclined to agree!), Roz’s frizz-free styling oil (seriously, best ever), Olaplex Leave-in Styling Treatment, and Furtuna Skin’s de-puffing, super hydrating moisturizing cream that I dab on my face first thing (talk about decadent luxuries).
My new home even has a dedicated belt drawer—a first for me, yet no problem filling it up, thanks to these new additions from B-Low the Belt, Madewell, Dehanche and an oldie but goodie Zara (below, cinching a Mille jacket in my mom’s living room).
And yes, in case you’re wondering, I will absolutely still have a junk drawer. Because even the most curated life needs a little room for chaos.
Miss you Mar! Loved this one 🤎
Speaking of Puglia - I'm heading there this summer. Can you please share your favorite boutiques and restaurants??
